BYD's First Humanoid Is a Showroom Employee
The world's largest EV maker will debut its robot in August — not on a factory floor or a spec sheet, but standing in a dealership, and that choice is the entire strategy.

BYD confirmed to the China Securities Journal on July 28 that it will unveil its first humanoid robot in August. A teaser posted by its Zhengzhou location points to the first days of the month.
The confirmation is unremarkable on its own — every large Chinese manufacturer is now attached to a humanoid program of some description. What makes this one worth reading closely is where BYD chose to put the robot, and what the company pointedly declined to lead with.
Not a factory. A store.
The debut happens at Di Space, BYD's network of offline science-education and experience centres. Not a production line, not a research campus, not a stage at a robotics conference. A retail floor, in front of customers.
The framing BYD is using is explicitly anti-spec-sheet. As the pre-launch messaging put it, the robot won't show up with a pile of specs and jargon — maybe when you walk closer, it moves slightly.
That is a strange thing for a company that sells on cost, scale, and vertical integration to say. BYD's entire competitive identity is built on manufacturing numbers. Choosing not to lead with them, for a product category where every rival leads with degrees of freedom, payload, and runtime, is a deliberate signal.
It suggests BYD does not think it is entering the humanoid capability race. It thinks it is entering the humanoid distribution race, and those are different contests with different winners.
The 15th Business Division
The program is not new. BYD stood up a dedicated team in late 2024 under its 15th Business Division to develop embodied AI products, humanoids among them. Nearly two years of work is arriving as a showroom demo — which reads as modest until you consider what the alternative demos have looked like.
Executive vice-president Stella Li has been laying the groundwork publicly. In June she described a "huge investment in AI" and related technologies including humanoid robotics. Her stated framing for how this competition gets won is the tell: success requires manufacturing capability alongside software and hardware strength.
That is a claim about which constraint binds. The prevailing assumption in embodied AI is that the bottleneck is intelligence — that once the policies are good enough, hardware follows. Li is asserting the inverse ordering, or at least a co-equal one. Coming from the company that vertically integrated its own batteries, semiconductors, and power electronics to win the EV cost war, it is not an idle position.
BYD is also planning an open platform covering both in-house robots and co-developed products. That is a supplier posture, not a product posture. The company that makes the actuators and the cells and the control boards can sell those to everyone else building humanoids, whether or not its own robot wins.
The dealership math
The commercial plan is where this gets genuinely novel. Li has said she expects two to three robots per BYD dealership serving as sales advisors within one to two years, and BYD is considering selling the robots through its existing dealer network.
Run the arithmetic on that and the strategy resolves. BYD operates thousands of sales outlets. Two to three units each is a five-figure order book generated entirely internally, before a single external customer signs anything. That is not a pilot. That is a manufacturing volume commitment large enough to move unit costs down the curve — the same mechanism that made BYD's batteries cheap.
It also solves the demo problem that has dogged the entire sector. Humanoid companies keep having to stage environments to show their robots working. BYD has a nationwide network of climate-controlled, flat-floored, well-lit rooms full of exactly the target customer, already staffed and already visited. The showroom is simultaneously the deployment site, the sales channel, and the marketing asset.
Li was careful to bound the claim: robots cannot replace the emotional connection a human salesperson builds with a customer. The robot is an addition to the floor, not a replacement for it. That restraint is doing real work — it sets an acceptance bar the product can actually clear, which is more than most humanoid demos manage.
The field it is entering
BYD is not early. XPeng is targeting mass production of its Iron humanoid by the end of 2026. Chery's Aimoga already sells consumer units. SAIC-GM has wheeled robots deployed inside its manufacturing operations. At this year's World Artificial Intelligence Conference, more than 200 companies showed embodied AI systems, against 25 humanoids exhibited at the 2024 edition.
The Chinese automotive sector has collectively decided the humanoid is an adjacent product to the car — same supply chain, same actuator and battery and sensor vendors, same assembly discipline, same dealer footprint. That thesis has been circulating for a year. BYD is the largest company to act on the distribution half of it.
The obvious comparison is Tesla's Optimus, and the comparison is instructive mostly for how the two programs differ. Optimus is positioned as a general-purpose labor product with factory work as the proving ground. BYD's first unit is positioned as a retail fixture with a defined, narrow, low-stakes job in an environment the company already controls.
One of those is a harder problem. The other is a shippable one.
The read
Judged as a robot, BYD's August debut will almost certainly underwhelm. A machine that greets showroom visitors and moves slightly when approached is not a capability breakthrough, and BYD has pre-emptively told everyone not to grade it that way.
Judged as a go-to-market, it is the most concrete humanoid deployment plan any automaker has articulated. Every other program in the sector is looking for its first serious customer. BYD wrote itself a purchase order for several thousand units and gave the product a job that a limited robot can actually do competently in front of the exact people it eventually wants to sell to.
Whether humanoids become a real category will be decided by capability. Whether BYD ends up manufacturing a lot of them may already be decided by geography.
