Claude Code Eats the IDE, and Microsoft Stops Renting Its Brain

Terminal agents now write roughly four percent of public GitHub commits, Microsoft just shipped seven of its own models, and the developer toolchain is quietly being rebuilt from the inside out.

The number that should stop every engineering leader in their tracks is small and unglamorous: roughly four percent. That, per SemiAnalysis estimates circulating in March, is the share of all public GitHub commits now attributable to Claude Code — with projections pointing at twenty percent by year's end. A terminal tool that barely existed two years ago is, by that math, on track to author one in five commits the open-source world produces. The tool didn't win an argument. It quietly started doing the work.

The supporting data is just as blunt. The Pragmatic Engineer's survey of some 15,000 developers found that 73 percent of engineering teams now reach for AI coding tools daily, up from 41 percent a year earlier. Claude Code topped the "most loved" list at 46 percent, with Cursor at 19 and GitHub Copilot trailing at 9. Most engineers are not picking a single winner: 70 percent run two to four of these tools at once. The story of 2026 is not consolidation. It is a stack.

The stack nobody planned

For two years the industry assumed one of these products would swallow the others. Instead, as The New Stack put it, Cursor, Claude Code, and Codex are "merging into one AI coding stack nobody planned" — splitting cleanly into three layers rather than collapsing into one. IDE-integrated copilots own the inner loop where you read and nudge code. Terminal agents like Claude Code own multi-file refactors, debugging, and the messy repository-wide work. Autonomous background workers own the tasks you hand off and walk away from. Developers aren't choosing between orchestration, execution, and review — they're wiring all three together and treating the seams as the actual product.

This is the same shift rippling through every corner of AI right now: the move from systems that talk to systems that act. The agent-framework crowd is fighting it out over observability and the agent-to-agent protocol layer. The crypto world is bolting wallets onto agents so they can transact without a human in the loop — Coinbase's x402 payment standard moved from announcement to production this spring. The through-line is the same. Talk was the demo. Action is the product. Coding tools just got there first because code is the rare domain where the agent's output can be compiled, tested, and proven wrong in seconds.

Microsoft stops renting its brain

The most strategically loaded news of the season came out of Build 2026 in San Francisco on June 2. Microsoft unveiled seven in-house MAI models — including MAI-Code-1-Flash, a five-billion-parameter coding model built end-to-end by Microsoft on, in its words, clean and appropriately licensed data, and trained directly inside the GitHub Copilot harnesses used in production. MAI-Thinking-1, its first homegrown reasoning model, was pointedly described as trained without OpenAI data.

Read that twice. The company whose Copilot franchise was built on OpenAI's models just shipped a coding model tuned to its own editor, its own repository graph, and its own agentic workflows — and made a point of saying it owes OpenAI nothing for it. Microsoft is doing to its own dependency exactly what Claude Code is doing to the IDE: refusing to rent a layer it can own. Alongside it came Agent 365, a control plane extending Entra, Defender, and Purview to observe and govern agents wherever they run, plus RTX-class developer hardware. The framing was explicit and repeated: the "agent-first" era, secure by default.

That last phrase is the tell. The euphoria of 2025 — every keynote a humanoid robot, every pitch deck a generative-video reel, every roadmap routed through Nvidia's Blackwell silicon, which still commands 94 percent of the data-center GPU market — has matured into something colder and more useful. The question stopped being whether agents are real. Microsoft, AWS, Google, GitHub, and Databricks have all answered it the same way: agents are a new software layer, and the fight now is over who governs it, who secures it, and who owns the model underneath. MAI-Code-1 is not a better autocomplete. It is a sovereignty play wearing a coding model's clothes.

For working developers, the practical lesson is less dramatic and more durable. The tool you adopt today is no longer a productivity gadget; it is a wager on whose stack your codebase will live inside for the next decade. Claude Code is winning hearts in the terminal. Microsoft is rebuilding its foundations so the next decade's lock-in runs on models it controls. The toolchain you assemble this year is the architecture you inherit. Choose it like you mean it.
