MCP and the Coming Tool Economy

The Model Context Protocol became the USB-C port of AI faster than anyone expected. Now a real market is forming around who builds the servers — and who gets paid when an agent plugs in.

Standards rarely win on merit. They win on timing, and on being good enough at the exact moment everyone is desperate for one. The Model Context Protocol — MCP, the open spec Anthropic introduced in late 2024 to let AI models talk to external tools and data through a single interface — won on both. Eighteen months later it has done something protocols almost never do this fast: it became boring, in the best sense. It became infrastructure.

The shorthand that stuck is "USB-C for AI," and it's the right metaphor for the right reason. Before MCP, every connection between a model and a tool was a bespoke integration — a one-off adapter for each model-tool pair, an N-times-M nightmare that made agents brittle and expensive to build. MCP collapses that into a single port. Build your tool as an MCP server once, and any MCP-speaking client — Claude, the agent frameworks, the IDEs, increasingly the whole ecosystem — can plug into it without a custom handshake.

How a protocol ate the agent stack

The adoption curve is the tell. What started as an Anthropic project became a genuine industry standard with startling speed: the major model providers and tool makers lined up behind it, the IDEs and coding agents shipped native support, and the catalog of available servers exploded from a handful of reference implementations into thousands — GitHub, Slack, Postgres, Stripe, filesystem, browser control, every SaaS API worth automating, plus a long tail of community servers for everything from Blender to Spotify.

The reason it spread isn't mysterious. MCP solved a problem every single agent builder had, and it solved it in the least opinionated way possible — a simple client-server spec over a defined transport, language-agnostic, with no platform lock-in baked in. Anthropic gave away the standard and, in doing so, made the entire agent ecosystem more valuable, including for competitors. That's the classic move: you don't monetize the protocol, you monetize your position in the world the protocol creates.

Anthropic didn't win by owning the port. It won by being the company that defined the port everyone else now builds against.

The thing agents were missing

To understand why MCP matters beyond plumbing, look at what an LLM is without it: a brilliant brain in a sensory-deprivation tank. It can reason, but it can't do. The entire 2025–2026 leap from "chatbot" to "agent" is, underneath the marketing, a story about giving models hands — and MCP is the standardized wrist.

This is the part builders underrate. The model is increasingly a commodity; the frontier labs leapfrog each other every few months and the capability gap at the top keeps narrowing. What's not commoditized is the connective tissue — the tools, the context, the permissioned access to the systems where real work happens. An agent's usefulness is bounded almost entirely by what it can reach. MCP is the layer that decides reach, which makes it one of the most strategically important pieces of the entire AI stack and one of the least glamorous.

In the agent era, the model is the engine and MCP is the drivetrain. Engines are interchangeable. The thing that connects power to the wheels is where the leverage hides.

Who actually gets paid

Here's the question every builder is now asking: if MCP is the marketplace, where's the money? The answer in mid-2026 is messier and more interesting than the early "app store for agents" hype suggested.

First, the SaaS incumbents. Companies like Stripe, Linear, and the GitHubs of the world ship official MCP servers not to sell the server — it's free — but to make sure that when an agent reaches for "send a payment" or "open an issue," it reaches for them. The server is a distribution play, a way to stay the default verb inside an agent's reasoning. In a world where the user never visits your dashboard because their agent does everything, being the MCP server the agent calls is the new being-on-the-home-screen.

Second, the infrastructure layer — and this is where the real venture money is flowing. Hosting, authentication, and management are the genuine pain points: running a server is easy, running a secure, authenticated, multi-tenant, observable server fleet is not. The protocol's evolution toward remote servers with proper OAuth-style auth cracked open the door to paid, hosted, gated MCP endpoints — call it the toll-booth model, where you meter and bill agent access to a premium data source or capability. Registries and marketplaces are racing to become the discovery layer, and a crop of startups is selling the "deploy and secure your MCP server" picks-and-shovels story to everyone else.

Third — and this is the one to watch — the metered tool. The cleanest monetization is a server that wraps something genuinely scarce: proprietary data, a specialized compute capability, a hard-to-replicate API. An agent calls it, the call gets billed, the value is unambiguous. This is the embryo of a real per-call tool economy, and as agent-to-agent payment rails mature, it's the model most likely to mint the first MCP-native businesses.

Why builders should care now

The honest caveat: MCP is not finished. Security is the open wound — a protocol that lets agents execute tools is a protocol that lets a malicious or poisoned server do real damage, and prompt-injection-through-tools remains an unsolved class of attack. Auth and identity standards are still hardening. Discovery is chaotic. Anyone telling you the standard is settled is selling something.

But the direction is clear enough to act on. If you're building, the move is to think in servers, not features — expose your product's core capability as a clean, well-scoped MCP server, because the agents that will be your real users in 2027 don't read your marketing site, they read your tool definitions. If you sit on proprietary data or a hard capability, the per-call server is your new pricing page.

The teams that internalized this early aren't waiting for the app-store moment. They've realized the marketplace already exists — it's just shaped like a protocol instead of a storefront, and the shelf space is a tool definition. The USB-C port got standardized. Now everyone's racing to be the thing worth plugging in.
