Nvidia's $500 Billion Korea Deal Is Really About HBM4

SK Telecom gets the headline gigawatts, but the clause that matters is the one binding Nvidia's next-generation memory supply to a single conglomerate.

Read the headline and the story is a number: SK Group and Nvidia signed letters of intent valued at more than $500 billion, announced on July 24. Read the actual announcement and the story is a supply chain.

There are two halves to this deal, and only one of them is a data center. SK Telecom will build a 2-gigawatt AI factory in Korea on Nvidia's full-stack DSX architecture, running Vera Rubin systems, with the first phase slated to come online in 2027. That half is the one that photographs well — concrete, transformers, substations, the physical grammar of the buildout everyone is already fluent in.

The other half is a long-term memory agreement between Nvidia and SK hynix to co-develop and optimize next-generation AI memory, HBM4 specifically, and to guarantee Nvidia stable supply of it. No gigawatts, no ribbon-cutting. It is also the half that determines whether anyone ships anything.

The bottleneck moved off the die

For most of the current cycle, the constraint on AI compute was described as a GPU constraint. It has not been a GPU constraint for a while. TSMC can pattern the logic. What it cannot do alone is deliver the high-bandwidth memory stacks that sit next to that logic, and the packaging that fuses the two into a single part.

High-bandwidth memory is a genuinely hard product: dozens of DRAM dies stacked vertically, through-silicon vias threaded between them, thermals that get worse with every layer, yields that punish anyone who scales too fast. Three companies in the world make it at volume, and SK hynix has been the lead supplier into Nvidia's flagship parts for multiple generations.

That makes SK hynix's roadmap a load-bearing dependency for Nvidia's roadmap. Vera Rubin is designed around HBM4. If HBM4 slips, or if a competitor outbids for the capacity, Nvidia's next platform ships late or ships short. Signing a joint-engineering and supply arrangement with the incumbent supplier is not a partnership announcement in the press-release sense. It is Nvidia putting a fence around the single input it does not manufacture.

The co-development language is the tell. The two companies are not just agreeing on volumes — they intend to tune memory stacks specifically to the bandwidth, power, and thermal envelope of Vera Rubin-class training and inference. That is the behavior of a vertically integrating company that has not, technically, vertically integrated. Nvidia does not need to own the fab if it owns the specification and the offtake.

Korea is now Nvidia's second home market

This is the second time in nine months that Nvidia has signed Korea. In October 2025, at the APEC summit in Gyeongju, Nvidia committed to supplying 260,000 GPUs across the Korean public sector and its industrial giants: roughly 50,000 for government sovereign-model work and national compute centers, and more than 200,000 split across Samsung, SK Group, Hyundai Motor Group, and Naver, phased out through 2030. Samsung took 50,000-plus for its semiconductor and manufacturing stack. Hyundai took 50,000 Blackwell GPUs for autonomous driving and factory AI. SK built an AI factory of its own and stood up what Nvidia billed as Asia's first industrial AI cloud, on RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell servers aimed at physical AI and robotics.

That deal was about seeding demand. This one is about locking in supply — and, not incidentally, about making the two inseparable. SK hynix sells Nvidia the memory. SK Telecom buys back the systems that memory ends up inside. Nvidia's chairman-level counterparty, Chey Tae-won, framed it exactly that way: SK's own memory plus SK's own infrastructure, pointed at building a world-class AI factory. Jensen Huang put it in national terms, calling it a new generation of AI factories to power Korea's next wave of growth.

Strip the diplomacy and it is a closed loop. Money flows out of Nvidia into Korean memory, and back into Nvidia as Korean system purchases. Both companies book growth. Neither takes on the other's balance-sheet risk. This is the same circularity that has drawn scrutiny in Nvidia's compute-for-equity arrangements with model labs, applied to a sovereign industrial base instead of a startup.

What the 2 gigawatts are actually for

The stated workloads are worth reading literally: sovereign AI, enterprise AI, physical AI, and agentic AI, across Korea and the wider Asia-Pacific region. Only one of those is the chatbot business.

Korea's industrial base — shipbuilding, automotive, heavy manufacturing, semiconductors — is unusually well suited to the physical-AI framing, and unusually motivated. It is a country with a shrinking working-age population and an export economy that cannot afford to lose a manufacturing cost race. Sovereign compute here is not prestige spending. It is a hedge against demographics.

The Asia-Pacific clause is the commercial upside. A 2GW facility in Korea is not sized for Korean demand alone; it is positioned as regional capacity for countries that want frontier compute without hosting it themselves, or without routing it through American hyperscalers. Nvidia has been assembling exactly this pattern market by market — a national champion builds, a region rents.

The number to distrust

$500 billion is a letter-of-intent number spread across data centers, memory supply, and next-generation computing infrastructure over an unstated horizon. It is not committed capital, and no GPU counts were disclosed. Treat it as an aspiration with signatures on it.

The parts to actually watch are narrower and testable. Does the first phase of the SK Telecom facility energize in 2027, or does it meet the same interconnection queues and turbine lead times slowing every other multi-gigawatt project? Does HBM4 reach volume on Vera Rubin's schedule? Those two answers decide whether this is a supply chain or a press release.

But the strategic read is already clear, and it does not depend on the headline figure. Nvidia spent the last two years being the company everyone else had to secure supply from. This week it acted like a company securing supply of its own.
