One Valve on One Engine Grounded Two American Rockets
Blue Origin traced the New Glenn explosion to a main oxygen valve on a single BE-4 — the same engine that flies on ULA's Vulcan, which has its own separate reason for sitting still.

On May 28, Blue Origin's third New Glenn first stage exploded during a static fire test at Launch Complex 36. The vehicle was destroyed. The pad — Blue Origin's only operational New Glenn launch site — was severely damaged.
This week the company named the cause. CEO Dave Limp: "The anomaly originated at the main oxygen valve on one of the BE-4 engines, which was later confirmed by hardware recovery and inspections."
A valve. Blue Origin recovered the hardware, inspected it, ran component-level tests and engine hotfires to reproduce the failure mode, and arrived at a fix that Limp described as small: "We're making small modifications to the valve that can be quickly retrofitted to existing engines. We're manufacturing the updated hardware, which will be ready by the end of this month."
By the standards of launch-vehicle failure investigations, this is close to the best possible outcome. The cause is a single component. The component is accessible. The fix is a retrofit rather than a redesign, and the modified parts exist in weeks, not quarters. "The path forward is clear," Limp said, and for once that is not corporate throat-clearing.
The problem is what else that valve is attached to.
Seven engines, then two more
New Glenn's first stage carries seven BE-4 engines. ULA's Vulcan first stage carries two. Same engine, same manufacturer, same main oxygen valve.
Vulcan has not flown since February 2026, grounded by an unrelated solid rocket booster anomaly. ULA has said Blue Origin will perform the necessary valve modifications on Vulcan's BE-4s, with work happening at ULA's Decatur, Alabama manufacturing plant and at Cape Canaveral. It has not said how the BE-4 finding changes Vulcan's return-to-flight schedule.
So the current state of American heavy lift outside SpaceX is two rockets, both on the ground, for two causes that have nothing to do with each other — and now a third condition that both must clear before either flies.
This is the part the org chart hides. On paper, New Glenn and Vulcan are independent vehicles from independent companies, and that independence is the entire premise of dual-source national security launch procurement. In the propellant path, they are the same engine. A finding in one is a finding in both. The redundancy that the architecture promises is real at the level of airframes, avionics, and pads; it is not real at the level of the component that just failed.
Nobody did anything wrong here. Consolidating on a good engine is sound engineering and sound economics — BE-4 exists in part because two customers could share the development cost. But shared development cost means shared failure modes, and a valve is a much smaller thing to have load-bearing across a national launch base than anyone would design on purpose.
Rebuilding the pad you have to launch from
LC-36 is the other half of the delay, and it is a construction project, not an engineering one.
Reconstruction is underway at the Integration Facility. Six new door panels have been erected on the north side — each 88 feet tall and roughly 40,000 pounds, for a combined opening about 196 feet wide. The south-end doors are still pending.
That is the tell for schedule. An engine valve retrofit is measured in weeks. Hanging 40,000-pound door panels and recertifying a pad that absorbed a first-stage explosion is measured differently, and Blue Origin's public target — return New Glenn to flight before the end of 2026 — depends far more on the concrete than on the valve. Limp offered no schedule update alongside the root-cause announcement, which is its own kind of signal.
The manifest is already moving
The payloads waiting on New Glenn have started making other arrangements or absorbing the slip:
- 48 Amazon Leo satellites, whose hardware was safely off-site when the booster exploded.
- AST SpaceMobile's BlueBird Block 2 satellites, planned in eight-satellite batches.
- NASA's Blue Moon Mark 1 lunar lander, Endurance, now rescheduled to Q1 2027.
The AST entry is the uncomfortable one. On August 5 — the day before Blue Origin published its root cause — SpaceX launched three AST SpaceMobile BlueBird satellites from Cape Canaveral on a Falcon 9, the third such mission for AST's direct-to-device constellation. A customer that wants New Glenn's lift capacity is flying its constellation on the competitor in the meantime, in smaller increments, because the competitor is available.
And available is the operative word. SpaceX flew its 90th Falcon 9 of the year on August 4, a 24-satellite Starlink stack out of Vandenberg, then the AST mission on the 5th, then another West Coast Starlink flight on the 8th. Three launches in five days while the rest of the American fleet works its findings.
What this actually means
Two readings, both true.
The narrow one is encouraging. Blue Origin found a specific, physical, recoverable cause; it did not end up in the far worse place where a vehicle is lost and the investigation produces a probable-cause list rather than a part number. Retrofittable valves and a pad rebuild is a recovery plan you can execute.
The broader one is that the concentration risk in US launch is worse than the vehicle count suggests. Counting rockets, America has three heavy-lift options. Counting first-stage engine programs outside SpaceX, it has one — and this quarter that one had a bad valve.
The fix ships by the end of the month. The dependency doesn't.
