Snap Shipped $2,195 AR Glasses That Need No Phone

Standalone Specs went on sale September 16 with a 51-degree field of view, LCoS waveguides, four hours of battery, and no tethered puck. The hardest part of face computing is the part Snap solved.

On September 16, Snap began selling Specs to consumers at $2,195. Pre-orders open with a $200 fully refundable deposit and first units ship in fall 2026. A bundle with the Connected Case runs $2,395, and Verizon Connected Wearable data plans start at $10 a month.

The hardware: Snap's own liquid crystal on silicon display, a 51-degree field of view, 16 million colors, see-through waveguide lenses, roughly four hours of battery with about 20 hours total using the charging case. No puck, no controller, no tether.

Standalone is the whole claim

Everything interesting about this product is contained in what is not in the box.

Every serious AR device has cheated on the same constraint. Magic Leap used a hip-worn compute pack. Apple Vision Pro uses an external battery. Meta's Orion prototype used a wireless puck. The reason is physics: the silicon, the batteries, and the thermal budget for spatial computing do not fit comfortably in a frame that rests on a nose.

Snap shipped a pair that does, at four hours of battery, weighing under five ounces. That is not a comfortable margin — four hours is a session, not a day — but it is the first consumer device in this category that puts the computer entirely in the glasses.

The 51-degree field of view is the second number to hold onto. It is smaller than a headset and dramatically larger than the heads-up displays that dominate the smart-glasses market, where 20 to 30 degrees is typical. At 51 degrees, content can occupy a meaningful portion of vision rather than floating in a letterbox. That is the threshold between a notification surface and a display.

What Snap is actually selling

Not a consumer gadget, despite the consumer launch. At $2,195 with four hours of runtime, this is a device for developers, enterprises, and people who buy first-generation hardware on principle.

Snap has been building toward this for a decade across four generations of Spectacles, most of which were commercial failures. What accumulated in that time was an AR development platform — Lens Studio, a creator base, and a content library — which is the asset that actually matters. Hardware without software is a demo.

Reviewers describe the operating system as more polished than previous generations and note that the built-in apps are organized around everyday tasks rather than novelty filters. That shift in framing is deliberate. Snap is positioning Specs as a computer you wear, not a camera you wear, and the enterprise track — with partners across cloud, CRM, and silicon — is where a $2,195 device finds buyers who do not flinch at the price.

The timing question

Specs arrive into a market that has changed shape underneath them.

The smart-glasses category that is actually selling is the one without a display: camera-and-audio frames with an assistant in your ear, at a few hundred dollars. That product works because it solves a real problem cheaply and looks like eyewear.

Meanwhile, the assistant layer that would make display glasses compelling has consolidated. Apple's Siri now runs on Gemini. Google opened Home MCP so agents can control physical devices. The interesting thing to put in front of someone's eyes is increasingly an agent's output, and Snap does not have a frontier model.

That is the structural bet Snap is making: that the display and the form factor are the scarce assets, and the intelligence can come from partners. It is the same bet Google is making with Home MCP from the opposite direction — own the physical layer, let someone else own the reasoning.

It is a defensible position, and it is also why a four-hour battery matters more than it appears. An agent that works continuously in the background needs a device that stays on. A session-length device supports session-length experiences, which is a narrower product than "a computer you wear."

The honest constraint

Reviewers who have worn it describe Specs as the best-working AR glasses prototype available and, in the same breath, as a session-based device rather than all-day eyewear.

Both things are true and they do not resolve. The category's promise has always been all-day ambient computing. The physics currently supports four hours. Every generation closes some of that gap, and the gap is still the reason this is a $2,195 product for early adopters rather than a $500 product for everyone.

What to watch

Whether developers ship. Snap's platform advantage only converts if Lens Studio creators build for a device with a 51-degree field of view and real compute. A thin launch catalog is the failure mode.

Enterprise deployments with names attached. Consumer sales at $2,195 will be small. A named logistics, field service, or healthcare deployment running hundreds of units is what would establish the category.

Whether Apple or Meta responds with a standalone. Snap just removed the puck. If either competitor answers within a year, the constraint was never as hard as the industry claimed — and Snap's first-mover window closes fast.
